Seth Rollins Didn’t Feel Guilty About Controversial Storyline

Seth Rollins

Seth Rollins knew what he had to do.

At Saturday Night’s Main Event in July, Seth Rollins suffered a knee injury during a match with LA Knight, throwing WWE into chaos. Or at least that’s what he wanted people to think.

Over the following weeks, Rollins, WWE, and everyone around him told the world that the injury would keep him out of action for several months. However, as Rollins was in possession of the Money In The Bank briefcase, some felt things might not be that straightforward. And incredibly, so it proved.

At SummerSlam, Seth Rollins shocked the world one more time, cashing in his Money In The Bank contract to end the night as the new World Heavyweight Champion. In the process, he revealed that his “injury” had been nothing but a lie.

In a new interview with Jimmy Traina on the SI Media podcast, Rollins opened up about the fake injury that led him to the World Championship. He began by saying that you could “count on two hands” who knew about storyline, before explaining his initial reaction to being presented with the idea.

“I’m not exactly sure where it was hatched. It was presented to me in advance, quite some time ago, which in our business is a few weeks. I thought the idea was brilliant when I first heard it. Obviously, the execution was going to be important, and the details were going to need to be ironed out.

I felt the crux of the idea was brilliant. I was the guy to be able to pull that off. I was very excited at the prospect of it. My level of commitment to our industry is second to none. I was the guy for the job.”

He went on to deny that the ruse was difficult to pull off, noting that as soon as he saw the confusion around Saturday Night’s Main Event, he knew it was going to work.

“I’m a professional, so I feel like I can do anything. All you need in our industry is a little shred of doubt, just a tiny bit of mystery, and you get the magic. I thought as soon as Saturday Night’s Main Event went off the air, you saw everybody asking questions, ‘Oh, we’re in. It’s over.’ I don’t think it was too difficult. I think people are maybe smarter than they are sometimes.”

Seth Rollins Had No Guilt Over Injury Deception

When asked whether he felt guilty about the deception, Rollins bluntly said that he didn’t. He added that if someone did the same to him, he’d understand, but even with that mindset, it was still difficult to hide the truth from John Cena when he checked in on him.

“I didn’t feel guilty. I let my wife [Becky Lynch] take all the guilt. She has the Irish guilt anyway. She steps on an ant and feels like she’s going to hell. If someone did this to me, I wouldn’t feel bad in the slightest. I would totally get it.

Even my closest friends. Maybe John Cena. John reached out and I had to do my best to wiggle around it. John and I are cut from the same cloth, so when John saw the final outcome, he was very happy and proud.”

Seth Rollins will be back in action at Wrestlepalooza when he teams with his wife Becky Lynch to face fellow WWE power couple CM Punk and AJ Lee. The match will be Lee’s first in just over a decade after her shock return to WWE on September 5.

Lee is a three-time Divas Champion, and often praised for her work in helping to usher in the ‘Women’s Revolution.’
