Santos Escobar Departing WWE, Details On When Contract Expires
Santos Escobar is expected to leave WWE very soon, and details have emerged on when his contract actually expires.
The Legado Del Fantasma group, which Santos Escobar used to lead on SmackDown and NXT, appears to be no more, as Escobar is leaving WWE very soon.
Fightful Select reports that Escobar made some ominous social media posts of late, such as posting an hourglass with a photo of himself in it. The reason for that is that Escobar’s deal with WWE is up at midnight tonight, and while WWE made attempts to re-sign him on a new deal, Escobar passed on their offers.
There were previous reports that Escobar’s was up very soon, but then Fightful was able to learn that it expires as of the end of October 6th. At that time, it was realized that he was going to be leaving WWE.
For most of this year, Escobar has been used sparingly as part of the Legado Del Fantasma group, which he led alongside Angel & Berto, and Elektra Lopez, who was released by WWE earlier this year.
Santos Escobar Was Not Featured On WWE Television Regularly
The last time the 41-year-old Santos Escobar wrestled on SmackDown on May 7th, when he lost a match to Rey Fenix. Since then, Escobar has been featured in vignettes with Angel and Berto, and occasionally at ringside for their matches, but he has clearly not been as prominently featured as he used to be.
During his WWE run that started over five years ago, he held the Cruiserweight Title in NXT for 321 days, which means it was just about a month short of one year. The Legado Del Fantasma group was formed in NXT with different members than the main roster.
While on SmackDown, Escobar was in a high-profile feud with Rey Mysterio that saw Escobar turn on his idol Rey and become a heel character who set out to kill Rey’s LWO group.
At WrestleMania 40 in 2024, Santos Escobar teamed up with Dominik Mysterio against Rey Mysterio and Andrade, which saw Rey and Andrade get the win.
Escobar officially signed with WWE in August 2019, marking a six-year run with the company.
Prior to his WWE run, Escobar wrestled as El Hijo del Fantasma across CMLL, AAA, and TNA/IMPACT Wrestling, and he was in King Cuerno in Lucha Underground as well.
