Sami Zayn Defends US Championship On WWE SmackDown, Next Title Match Announced
Sami Zayn is proving himself to be a fighting United States Champion on WWE SmackDown.
The United States Championship changed hands on the August 29th edition of WWE SmackDown in Lyon, France, when Sami Zayn beat Solo Sikoa for the US Title.
Even though Solo Sikoa had help from his MFT group, Zayn had backup in the form of Jacob Fatu and Jimmy Uso, which allowed Zayn to beat Solo clean to win the US Title for the first time.
One week later, on the September 5th SmackDown, Zayn faced John Cena in Cena’s final SmackDown match. Zayn also asked Cena if he could carry on the legacy of the US Title Open Challenge, and Cena said that was cool with him.
The Sami Zayn-John Cena match was a great one, but it also ended in controversy when Brock Lesnar showed up to ruin it, and there was no clear winner.
Sami Zayn Defends US Title And Knows Who He Will Face Next Week
There have been open challenges in the past where a wrestler is in the ring and calls out anybody to challenge them. Sometimes the match is known beforehand, while other times it happens “live” to shock the audience.
On WWE SmackDown in Norfolk, VA, Zayn defended the US Title against Rey Fenix. They went on to have an excellent match that went nearly 20 minutes, and Zayn got the win with the Helluva Kick while the fans believed it could have ended sooner and were booing the referee for what they thought were slow counts.
In a backstage segment on WWE SmackDown, Sami Zayn was approached by rising star Carmelo Hayes, who said he wanted to face Zayn for the US Title next week on the September 19th edition of SmackDown. Zayn, who is a fighting champion, told Melo that it was fine and told him not to miss when he gets his opportunity.
Clearly, Sami Zayn is a fighting champion and he’s going to keep defending the US Title as best he can against fresh opponent who will likely put him to the test every week.
