Sami Zayn Brings Record-Setting WWE Title Reign Crashing To An End
Gunther has defeated all before him on his way to becoming the longest-reigning WWE Intercontinental Champion of all time and at WrestleMania Sami Zayn put a halt to it.
Gunther captured the Intercontinental Championship all the way back in June 2022 and since then has eliminated all challengers that have come his way in brutal style. The Ring General broke The Honky Tonk Man’s thirty-five-year record to become the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion of all time and seemed destined to hold the title for a lot longer.
Sami Zayn earned his title match at WrestleMania 40 by winning a gauntlet bout on the 11th of March edition of Raw. Zayn last defeated Chad Gable to win on that occasion and Gable had been helping Zayn train for Gunther to ensure that the Austrian star would lose the title that he has kept an iron grip on.
Sami Zayn/Gunther Wins Big At WrestleMania 40
WrestleMania 40 saw Sami Zayn’s wife and son see him off to make his entrance before Gable gave the challenger one final pep talk. As Zayn made his way to the Gorilla position before emerging to the crowd, Kevin Owens was on hand to give his friend a hug as he felt the love.
Once things got in the ring, Gunther was not in a loving mood as he continued his dominant streak with Sami Zayn. The Ring General dominated nearly all of the match but the challenger would not quit and after a wild brainbuster from the top rope that didn’t go quite as planned, Zayn nailed several Helluva Kicks to bring the record-setting title reign of Gunther to an end.
This now means Sami Zayn will head into Raw in his hometown of Montreal, Quebec on the 15th of April with the Intercontinental Championship around his waist and he is sure to receive a hero’s welcome.
