Sami Zayn has turned into one of the most popular characters in WWE and he has done his best to explain why it happened to him this way.
For the past eight months, Sami Zayn went from being a cheap heel character that used underhanded tactics to help The Bloodline win matches to become one of the most popular characters in all of WWE.
That popularity has led to Zayn main eventing WWE Elimination Chamber this Saturday, February 18th when he challenges Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship in Montreal, which just so happens to be Sami’s hometown.
Since late 2017, Sami Zayn has been mostly a heel character on WWE television. Sometimes he was aligned with best friend Kevin Owens and at other times, he wasn’t. Whether he had fans against him like in the past or when he has them by his side now, Zayn is recognized as one of the best all-around performers in WWE.
In a Zayn profile article by Blake Murphy of Sportsnet, Sami Zayn spoke about how his character wears his heart on his sleeve.
“I think the character sort of harnesses this thing that we all lost about ourselves. Like the ability to trust and the ability to just be, I don’t know, present and trusting. When you’re a kid, you kind of trust everything and everyone around you, and then little by little, that trust gets broken by people in the world, that hardens you.”
“I think it’s very refreshing and very endearing to see someone, when they’ve still managed to preserve that, the ability to still wear your heart on your sleeve, honestly.”
You can watch WWE Elimination Chamber, streaming live at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on Saturday, February 18, on Peacock in the United States and on WWE Network everywhere else.
