Sabu Names His Favourite Opponents From His ECW Career
ECW legend Sabu has revealed the two wrestlers he most enjoyed working with throughout his storied career.
Speaking at the For the Love of Wrestling convention, the hardcore icon was asked which opponents stood out to him the most. His answer was immediate.
“Rob Van Dam and Mick Foley. Two different styles, two great guys, two great wrestlers, very different styles.”
Sabu and Rob Van Dam were at the heart of some of ECW’s most unforgettable matches, engaging in high-risk, high-energy contests that became synonymous with the promotion’s extreme reputation. Their rivalry delivered countless breathtaking moments, but they were also a successful tag team, winning the ECW World Tag Team Championship on two occasions.
While his matches with Foley were less frequent, they were no less impactful. Wrestling under his Cactus Jack persona in ECW, Foley’s brutal, brawling style contrasted with Sabu’s daredevil offence, creating a unique and memorable clash whenever they met in the ring. Their battles in the mid-1990s remain a significant part of ECW history.
A true pioneer of hardcore wrestling, Sabu’s influence on ECW is undeniable. His rivalries and alliances with talents like RVD and Foley helped define an era, leaving an enduring legacy in professional wrestling.
What Traumatic Experience Kickstarted Sabu’s Journey Into Pro Wrestling?
Sabu spoke about how a near-death experience kickstarted his journey into professional wrestling. The two-time ECW Champion said that when he was just 19 years old, he was shot in the face and for some reason that sparked his decision to become a wrestler. When he got out of the hospital he began his training and made his debut in 1985 at the age of 20.
