New Roman Reigns WrestleMania Match Heavily Discussed, Plans Adjusted
Roman Reigns will likely face a new rival at WrestleMania.
As excitement around WrestleMania 41 continues to build, Roman Reigns has been linked with a whole list of potential opponents. Fans have suggested matches against the likes of The Rock, Jacob Fatu, and even Seth Rollins could be on the horizon, but a new rival has now come to the fore.
In the lead-up to Survivor Series, Reigns was forced into an uneasy alliance with CM Punk as the pair battled Solo Sikoa and the new Bloodline. The move came at the behest of Paul Heyman who has an extensive history with both men.
Interestingly, Punk later claimed Heyman owed him a favour for teaming with Reigns inside WarGames.
Roman Reigns In Creative Switch
According to a new report, from Fightful Select, Roman Reigns vs. CM Punk at WrestleMania 41 has been “heavily discussed.” As noted by sources, this wasn’t particularly the plan even a few weeks ago, but things have been adjusted.
The report adds that CM Punk had “hoped” for the match.
To date, the pair have only had one singles match, and that came in January 2014 shortly before Punk acrimoniously left the company. Following his exit, Punk revealed he was told by WWE to “make Roman look strong.”
Prior to Punk’s WWE return in November 2023, Reigns is believed to be one of those against the move.
Fightful explained that the match between Reigns and Punk is “a drastically different direction” than what was originally planned. Although none of these plans involved The Rock. However, much of the card, including this match could change if The Rock wrestled at the event.
Ibou, of Wrestle Purists, added further context in a post on social media.
Roman Reigns vs CM Punk was not the originally planned WrestleMania match. As I’ve said for 10 days straight, there is a lot of backstage political maneuvering taking place as top guys jockey for WrestleMania spots. CM Punk wants to main event the entire thing. Guys are getting into position.
If The Rock wrestles at WrestleMania this year it will be to face Cody Rhodes. Roman/Rock was pretty much never on the table for WM 41.
Roman Reigns and CM Punk will be in action on the January 6th episode of Raw against Solo Sikoa and Seth Rollins respectively.
