Rob Van Dam Recalls Feeling Like A Superhero During Huge WWE Match
RVD was quite the daredevil in the ring, and on this particular night, the crowd gave him extra elevation.
Rob Van Dam had won Money In The Bank in 2006 and would cash it in to face John Cena at the ECW One Night Stand pay-per-view for the WWE Championship.
WWE had acquired ECW at this point, and the reason behind the event was to showcase ECW stars in their hardcore glory one final time before it became WWE-ECW.
Van Dam, with his hardcore credentials, was backed heavily by the crowd during his bout with Cena. Cena, on the other hand, was heavily booed in what was a hostile environment with rabid fans showing their displeasure with WWE and its babyface.
Rob Van Dam won the match with help from Paul Heyman and was crowned the new WWE Champion.
Rob Van Dam Explains Superhero-Like Feeling On ECW’s One Night Stand
Van Dam said in a new interview with Gamers Hub that the acoustics of the skydome, where the PPV was held, ensured that the crowd noise stayed inside. He explained the “shared hardcore energy” with the crowd and how it made him feel like a superhero.
Definitely the most responsive and interactive crowd out of my whole career. They were so loud in the building and with the shape of the room, it doesn’t allow the sound to escape like it does through a huge skydome.
So you could hear it and stay connected with it. Everybody’s energy was shared with one big pool of hardcore energy, and that’s the best way to describe that. Just a big pool of hardcore energy that completely filled the room up. I was riding on their energy, it was like surfing on a wave. It was so awesome. I was a superhero that night.
