Ricochet’s Honest Assessment Of WWE’s Counter-Programming

Ricochet

AEW star Ricochet has given his assessment of WWE’s aggressive counter-programming strategy.

WWE has pursued a dogged counter-programming strategy to AEW since before Tony Khan’s company ever made air. Just weeks before Dynamite debuted in October 2019, WWE moved NXT from its own network to the USA Network and the Wednesday Night Wars were born.

Recently, WWE engulfed All In Texas with three shows across one weekend. NXT went head-to-head with the PPV, while Saturday Night’s Main Event, featuring Goldberg’s retirement match, aired after it. The next day saw the all-female Evolution show return, where Naomi shocked everyone to win the Women’s World Championship.

For the first time ever, a WWE main roster PLE was set to go head-to-head with an AEW pay-per-view as Wrestlepalooza was announced for September 20th, the same day as All Out. Tony Khan changed course and moved his show to the afternoon to run unopposed.

But with WWE showing no sign of letting up their aggressive stance towards AEW, what does Ricochet, a man who has worked for both companies, think about it?

Ricochet Happy To Speak Up Against WWE’s Tactics

Speaking on The Ariel Helwani Show, Ricochet was asked for his reaction to the counter-programming, and he noted that he’s happy to get vocal on social media about it when things are happening in bad faith:

Every company’s goal is to make the most money possible, that’s the goal of every company, that’s why you make a company. So, you can’t argue against that. But when we feel things are being done in bad faith, that’s when I feel, like, okay then let’s get a little crazy.

But at the end of the day, I think AEW is in a great spot. I think AEW is focused on us. Now more than ever, I think they’re trying to figure out ways to create new stories and drama and suspense and while keeping it still sports-based, still creating an alternative to what people have known for years.
