Ricochet Made The Biggest Geek In The World By AEW
Dave Meltzer has lashed out at one AEW segment where Ricochet was made to look pretty stupid ahead of his huge match against old rival Will Ospreay.
Ricochet and Will Ospreay will clash one-on-one in the Continental Classic on Christmas Collision on what could be a huge night for AEW. The huge college football match between Clemson and Texas will air before Collision meaning a huge audience could still be watching as the wrestling show begins.
But Dave Meltzer thinks AEW might have spoiled one of their biggest matches after Ricochet was punked out on Dynamite.
Dave Meltzer Unhappy With Timing Of Ricochet Angle
For weeks Ricochet has been showing off his Hurt Syndicate business card as he seems to be leaning into a heel turn. On Dynamite Holiday Bash, however, the high-flying star went too far with his sucking up and Bobby Lashley grabbed him by the throat while MVP ripped up the card noting that “nobody likes a kiss ass.” Ricochet was then sent with his tail between his legs from the ring.
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer explained why he thinks the angle was entirely wrong and that while Ricochet and Ospreay will surely still have a great match, it doesn’t mean nearly as much:
But even if you did [want to do this segment], this was the worst week possible to do it, because it’s like okay, Will Ospreay and Ricochet are going to go out there. This guy [Ricochet] comes off as the biggest geek in the world. I mean, just a horrible, horrible portrayal. It’s like you’re basically telling everyone that this guy is a freaking prelim nobody, not worthy of anyone even caring about him, no matter how good a job he may have done in that trios match on the pay-per-view and all that.
It’s like he is just – you’re the Komander match, or whatever. No matter what, he’s low level. Then he’s going to go in there on Saturday with Will Ospreay and they’re probably going to have [a great match]. I mean, Jesus Christ, the Will Ospreay, Darby Allin match tonight, my God, that’s one of the best TV matches of the year. And the Ricochet match probably should be as good or better.
Will Ospreay is really the most over guy in the company right now, and he’s gonna go 20 minutes back and forth in an incredible match with a freaking super, super talented geek. And it’s like he didn’t have to be a geek.
Meltzer’s co-host Bryan Alvarez asserted his belief that the angle could well lead to a swerve and that the Hurt Syndicate will be the ones to cost Ospreay his match against Ricochet. That might prove difficult as all outside interference is banned in the Continental Classic.
Dynamite also saw Adam Copeland’s return teased by AEW, seven months after the former TNT Champion was taken out with a broken leg.
