Ric Flair has one hope for John Cena’s retirement.

It’s finally been announced that on December 13, John Cena will step into a WWE ring for the last time. His retirement match at Saturday Night’s Main Event in Washington, D.C., will bring to an end one of the most championship-laden runs in company history.

During his time with WWE, Cena has won very major honour on offer, often several times, while becoming the face of the company after The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin stepped away in the early 2000s.

However, as history has proven time and time again, wrestling retirements are notoriously flimsy. So, will Cena be able to stay out of the ring after he says goodbye, especially with a potentially massive payday on the table for WrestleMania in Saudi Arabia in 2027 on the horizon?

Ric Flair Hopes John Cena Can Walk Away

During a new interview with Escapist Magazine, wrestling legend and fully fledged member of the John Cena fan club, Ric Flair, said he hopes Cena can resist temptation and stay retired after his last dance in December.

“John is making so damn much money in the movies right now. He doesn’t need to do anything else. I hope that he’ll walk away and stay away. Wrestling is very addictive. When you’ve done it as long as John has, over 20 years, it’s hard to change your way of life.

I see John periodically, but I can’t say enough nice things about John Cena. He’s a wonderful person, and he is very happily married; his wife is lovely. They’re building a new home here in Tampa.”

Flair famously has a somewhat chequered history with retirements, after ending his career against Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania in March 2008. However, by November 2009, he was back in the ring and later signed with TNA, where he resumed his in-ring career in earnest.

The Nature Boy finally retired on July 31, 2022, at a special event under the grand old Jim Crockett Promotions banner. Despite hinting on several occasions that he could be tempted to wrestle again, Flair has so far remained retired.
