Ric Flair has revealed who told him about his memorable 1992 Royal Rumble win that led to him becoming the WWE Champion.

During the 1992 WWE Royal Rumble match, Ric Flair entered third in a match where the WWE Championship was on the line. It was the first time WWE had a Royal Rumble match where the vacant WWE Championship was up for grabs for the winner of the Rumble match.

Flair ended up winning the match after lasting 59:26. The ending saw Sid Justice eliminate Hulk Hogan, who wasn’t happy about it, so Hogan went after Sid and that allowed Flair to flip Sid over the top to eliminate him. Flair was presented with the WWE Championship after the match to begin the first of his two reigns as the WWE Champion.

While Flair had been a main event performer in the NWA throughout the 1990s, he was still new in WWE because joined the company in late 1991 as the “Real Worlds Champion” from the NWA and WCW. Getting a push in WWE is one thing, but winning the WWE Championship so soon after joining the company surprised a lot of people, and likely Flair himself.

On a recent episode of his “To Be The Man” podcast, Ric Flair said a fellow WWE Hall of Famer is the one that told him he was winning the Royal Rumble match. Flair added that he was just happy about being away from WCW at that point.

“Believe it or not. Jake Roberts told me that day in the gym, and I didn’t, I didn’t believe Jake. He said congratulations I hear you’re winning. I said what are you talking about? That was the last thing I was thinking about. I was just glad to be away and be with friends that were real.”

The 2023 edition of the WWE Royal Rumble takes place on Saturday, January 28th from the Alamodome in San Antonio.
