Ric Flair Says Dusty Rhodes Was As Innovative As Vince McMahon
WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair has offered glowing praise for his longtime rival and friend Dusty Rhodes, describing him as one of the most innovative minds in wrestling history, on par with former WWE Chairman Vince McMahon.
Speaking in a 2023 interview on This Past Weekend with comedian Theo Von, Flair reflected on Rhodes’ legacy both inside and outside the ring. When asked about his thoughts on the late wrestling legend, Flair didn’t hesitate to highlight Rhodes’ creative genius.
“Great guy. He was so lovable, and one of the most innovative, right there tied with Vince McMahon,” Flair said.
Dusty Rhodes, who passed away in 2015, remains one of the most respected figures in wrestling. While his in-ring charisma and larger-than-life persona made him a fan favourite, his influence behind the scenes was equally significant. Rhodes served as a booker for Jim Crockett Promotions and held creative roles in both WWE and WCW. His contributions include the invention of the WarGames match and the conceptualisation of various characters and pay-per-view titles that continue to shape modern wrestling.
Flair also addressed Rhodes’ often overlooked athleticism, emphasising the stamina and endurance required to perform at the highest level, something Rhodes delivered consistently despite his size.
“You know, I wrestled him probably a thousand hours broadway. He could wrestle for an hour, he was in good condition. It’s hard to wrestle for an hour,” Flair added.
The pair’s legendary rivalry during the 1980s, particularly under the NWA and WCW banners, became one of professional wrestling’s defining feuds.
Which WWE Hall Of Famer Believes Ric Flair Is Damaging His Legacy?
Fellow WWE Hall of Famer Jake “The Snake” Roberts spoke about how he thinks Ric Flair is damaging his legacy by trying to get back into the ring despite having numerous “retirement” matches. Roberts urged “The Nature Boy” to stay away from the ring as he thinks wrestling again in his mid-70s is only hurting his reputation as one of the greatest wrestlers ever.
