Rey Mysterio Says WrestleMania Mask Was Six Years In The Making

Rey Mysterio had a special mask that he wore at WrestleMania 39 and he explained that it was in the works for six years.

One of the most emotional matches during WrestleMania 39 Night 1 saw Rey Mysterio face off against his son Dominik for the first time ever. For months, Rey refused to hit his son, but then he reached his breaking point recently when Dominik told his mother Angie (Rey’s wife) to shut up. Rey decked Dominik with a punch and the match was on.

At WrestleMania 39, Rey had a special entrance where he was driven out in a low rider with Snoop Dogg while the music of Eddie Guerrero played in the arena. It switched to Rey’s music after he got to the ramp and made his way down to the ring.

Rey Mysterio wore a mask that was a tribute to The Great Muta, who was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame with Rey on Friday night.

The match would see Dominik try to cheat with the help of his friends in The Judgment Day, but Rey had help from the Latino World Order (aka Legado del Fantasma) and Rey managed to pin Dominik after a 619 and top rope splash for the win.

During the post-WrestleMania press conference, Rey Mysterio explained the process of creating the mask that paid tribute to Muta while also having the color scheme of The Flash.

“Six years ago, this mask has been in the projects. The creator of this mask is the creator of Hollywood, the Marvel Universe. That’s how deep it went. WrestleMania goes Hollywood, it was the perfect time. We didn’t go superhero, we went Hollywood style this year. I was very happy with the outcome.”

“On top of that, we had a mixture of the mask being made by a good friend of ours, Darnell, who works for the Marvel Universe, and (Masahiro) Hayashi, my creator since 1996, who made the tights, the vest, and everything else. I’m very happy with the outcome of the outfit tonight. I hope the fans loved it as much as I did.”
