Rey Mysterio is preparing to get back in the ring, and he knows the clock is ticking.

Rey Mysterio was pulled from WrestleMania 41 at the 11th hour after suffering a significant injury. The veteran had been due to face El Grande Americano, but 24 hours earlier on SmackDown, he sustained an injury while teaming with Dragon Lee and Rey Fenix to defeat American Made.

In the days after the event it was confirmed that Mysterio had suffered a torn groin that required surgery. Impressively, Mysterio wanted to compete at WrestleMania despite the injury before being stood down by doctors.

Rey Mysterio Will Return Soon

During a new interview with La Platica, Mysterio was asked about his recovery, and he confirmed that he should be back by August. He also noted that he suffered a “busted” eardrum as well as the well documented torn groin.

“Good, pretty good. Yeah, man. I started my [physical therapy]. Not to mention, I had a busted eardrum as well, so I fixed that during my time off. I’m on the road to recovery. I should be back hopefully by August.”

Mysterio went on to break down exactly how the injury occured, revealing that all did was try to run across the ring.

“I stepped in the ring, the guy that I was wrestling stood in front of me, he bailed out the ring underneath the bottom rope and I went to chase him. And when I pushed off with my left leg, I just heard a [tear].” Like, ‘That’s it? I tore my groin like that?’

Yeah, usually it happens on the simplest sh*t. But with all the stuff that I do, you would always think that it’s something crazy. No, it’s always the opposite. Always the small stuff.”

Mysterio added that while retirement is “really close,” he’s still enjoying performing and his connection with fans. Mysterio had previously hinted that he’d retire when he hit 50, but his 50th birthday has been and gone and he remains as active as ever.

While Rey Mysterio remains on the sidelines, it’s been reported that Dominik Mysterio is also dealing with a legitimate injury. The younger Mysterio had been scheduled to defend the Intercontinental Championship against AJ Styles at Night of Champions but the match was scrapped.

Despite claims from some fans, Mysterio has suffered a rib injury, but won’t be out for a significant period.
