Rey Mysterio Kicks Off New WWE-AAA Alliance
Rey Mysterio has made a special appearance.
Ahead of WrestleMania 41 night one, WWE announced the acquisition of the famous Mexican Promotion AAA. Michael Cole broke the news during the WrestleMania 41 pre-show, shortly after a new Worlds Collide event involving talent from NXT and AAA was announced.
The deal between the two sides is expected to be officially wrapped up in the third quarter, as speculation continues that AAA could be rebranded NXT Mexico.
Regardless, there’s expected to be significant movement between the two talent rosters with many Latin WWE stars expected to Mexico. In fact, the crossover has already started.
Rey Mysterio Launches New Era
As AAA’s show in Mexico City began on May 3, a video featuring Rey Mysterio played, where he promised that AAA and WWE were about to take Lucha Libre to new heights.
“For nearly a century, Lucha Libre has redefined wrestling. And now the whole world is watching AAA and WWE, taking Lucha Libre higher, faster, better, farther. The future flies here.”
As noted by LuchaBlog on April 2, there remain more questions than answers within AAA regarding the promotion’s new relationship with WWE.
“To the best of my knowledge, AAA has not sat down its office or wrestlers as a group to explain what’s happening, what’s next and where that leaves the people who are currently working for AAA.
That should happen here. There’s a lot of luchadors with question marks for futures, and how AAA treats them publicly and privately will start answering those questions.”
Rey Mysterio is currently out of action after suffering an injury on the eve of WrestleMania. The star had been due to face El Grande Americano at the event, but was forced to withdraw after suffering a groin injury just 24 hours before the show and was replaced by Rey Fenix.
There’s no word on when Mysterio will be back in the ring.
