Rey Mysterio Comments on Signing New Contract with WWE, Working with his Son Dominik, More

Rey Mysterio recently talked to Sports Illustrated about his current run in WWE that recently saw him sign a new contract with the company that he debuted for in 2002. It’s been nearly 20 years now and Rey is optimistic that at 46-years-old he has several more years left as an active wrestler. Here are some interview highlights.

Rey commented signing a new deal with WWE recently:

“We never made the signing of my new deal public, but there is definitely going to be more time to see Rey Mysterio in WWE. I’m going to keep wrestling, at least until Father Time catches up and says, ‘It’s time to go.'”

It was last August when there were first reports about Rey signing a new deal with WWE. The belief was that it was a three-year deal, but that was never confirmed. We also don’t know if Rey’s current comments are about the deal he signed last August or if there was another new deal.

Rey talked about what led to him taking a break from WWE in 2015.

“I am so happy to see my son Dominik doing so well, and it means so much to me to be with him in WWE. When I left WWE [in 2015], I was tired, I was beat and I was going through a phase in my life where I just needed some time off. That time away recharged my batteries.”

Rey spoke about getting to work with Dominik in WWE. They are currently on the Smackdown brand.

“During that period, I was given time to think about what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I sat down with my wife and my kids, and we ultimately made the decision together that it was time for me to come back to WWE. I am thankful for that opportunity because I knew my son wanted to be part of this industry, and I wanted to reopen the door for Dominik to eventually get a foot in the business. WWE has treated me like I had never left, and I am so grateful and truly blessed for that. I’m under WWE’s wings once again, and they’ve seen such potential in Dominik and such a bright future for him.”

There’s more in Sports Illustrated’s interview with Rey including discussion about Rey wearing a mask sponsored by Victoria beer and more.

TJR Thoughts: I really hope WWE is smart enough to have Rey and Dominik win the Tag Team Titles together. WrestleMania is a good time for it.
