Report: Major Women’s Triple Threat Match at WWE WrestleMania 35, Why Royal Rumble Plans Changed

TJR Wrestling

The current plan for a major women’s match at WrestleMania 35 is for Ronda Rousey to face both Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair in a triple threat match, according to the Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer.

The original plan for Rousey’s Royal Rumble match was a rematch from Survivor Series against Charlotte Flair. That plan was changed because we saw this past week on Raw where Sasha Banks emerged as the challenger to Rousey’s Raw Women’s Title.

That push for Banks really came out of nowhere because Banks has been used mostly as a tag team wrestler with Bayley for several months and now she’s getting a title shot again. It would be a surprise if Rousey lost the title to Banks.

What isn’t known is how they get to the triple threat match at WrestleMania. We could all come up with scenarios to set it up, so it is anyone’s guess at this point. If Flair or Lynch wins the women’s Royal Rumble, which Lynch could be in even though she has a SD Women’s Title match at the Rumble, then that’s the easy way to get one of them to challenge Rousey. They could even book a tie finish to set up the triple threat with Rousey.

Another scenario that makes a lot of sense to me would be to have Lynch win the Smackdown Women’s Title back at the Royal Rumble. Flair can win the Rumble and declare that she wants to face both Raw Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey and Smackdown Women’s Champion Becky Lynch at WrestleMania. That’s a good way to set up the triple threat match.

The key thing to remember is that after the Royal Rumble on January 27, WWE also has the Elimination Chamber PPV on February 17 and Fastlane on March 10. We have seen in past years that WWE has used the Elimination Chamber show to set up title matches at WrestleMania (like Roman Reigns winning Elimination Chamber last year to challenge Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania), so the third woman could be added to the match that way too.

It was noted by Meltzer that by making it Rousey vs. Lynch vs. Flair at WrestleMania, it would help the careers of Rousey and Flair by saying they were part of the first ever women’s main event of WrestleMania…if it’s the main event. The match quality would likely be better with Flair involved as well since she has done so well in big matches.

On a final note, Meltzer noted that the Rousey vs. Lynch vs. Flair plan is “not locked in stone” right now, so keep in mind that plans may change.

TJR Thoughts: I prefer singles matches at WrestleMania, but in this case, I don’t mind a triple threat because of the faith I have in Becky and Charlotte in triple threat matches together. They are great together. I think Ronda will do well in the match too. I have high expectations for it if happens and I hope it’s the main event.
