Report: “Eye For An Eye” Match at WWE Extreme Rules to be Cinematic Match with CGI Effects to Simulate Eye Being Pulled Out
There are expected to be two cinematic matches at WWE’s next pay-per-view, which is currently titled The Horror Show at Extreme Rules. That show is going to air on Sunday, July 19 on WWE Network with the majority of the card live, but the two cinematic matches will obviously be pre-taped. We already know that Braun Strowman and Bray Wyatt will be in a Wyatt Swamp Fight that may have been taped already, but if not they still have nine days until the PPV takes place.
This past Monday on Raw, WWE announced that Rey Mysterio will face Seth Rollins in an “Eye for an Eye Match” at Extreme Rules. What does that mean? We didn’t know. Then we checked WWE.com and found out more info on the match. We did a post on it already this week, but here it is again:
The Horror Show at Extreme Rules added a new level of terror as Rey Mysterio and Seth Rollins will meet in an Eye for an Eye Match. Mysterio teamed with Kevin Owens to defeat Rollins & Murphy for the right to choose the gory stipulation where a winner can only be determined by extracting the opponent’s eye.
The Monday Night Messiah has tormented the legendary luchador for months and nearly ended Mysterio’s career with a gruesome attack on his eye. With his career in jeopardy, the iconic Superstar watched as his son Dominik got involved to defend his father’s honor, but Dominik found himself in Rollins’ sights as well. With Rollins attempting to replicate the same brutal ocular assault on Dominik, Mysterio promised to get “an eye for an eye” from the devious Superstar.
Can Mysterio achieve the ruthless justice he craves, or will Rollins finish the barbaric attack that set this match in motion?
Don’t miss The Horror Show at Extreme Rules, streaming on the award-winning WWE Network, Sunday, July 19, at 7 ET/4 PT!
There is more info about this match as well.
This week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter by Dave Meltzer (available via subscription) is reporting that WWE’s plan is to do a taped match where some sort of CGI effects will be used as a way to simulate an eye being pulled out to end the match. In other words, it’s going to be a pre-tape match. The location isn’t known, nor do we know when it will be taped or if it has been taped.
Regarding Mysterio, he is apparently working for WWE without a contract and when he asked for a raise from his previous 18-month deal, he was denied. It’s not known what Rey’s future will be after Extreme Rules. It was noted by Meltzer that WWE is likely the frontrunner to keep Mysterio because Rey’s son Dominick is expected to start wrestling very soon, but it’s always possible that Rey was offered a better deal elsewhere and he could go where the best contract is. For now, all we really know is Rey is working for WWE without a signed contract, so it’s more of a handshake deal.
The lineup for WWE’s The Horror Show at Extreme Rules looks like this right now:
Wyatt Swamp Fight (Non-Title): Braun Strowman vs. Bray Wyatt
WWE Championship: Drew McIntyre (c) vs. Dolph Ziggler – Ziggler gets to pick the stipulation.
Raw Women’s Championship: Asuka (c) vs. Sasha Banks
Eye for an Eye: Seth Rollins vs. Rey Mysterio
Smackdown Women’s Championship: Bayley (c) vs. Nikki Cross
United States Championship: Apollo Crews (c) vs. Montel Vontavious Porter
TJR Thoughts: I think the Eye for an Eye Match sounds ridiculous if they are going to use CGI effects to book a finish, but that’s WWE these days. They use weird titles for shows and matches. I don’t even mind the cinematic matches, but this sounds too silly even for WWE.
