Real Reason For The Rock’s People’s Title In WWE Revealed

The Rock

Before WrestleMania 40, The Rock was presented with a People’s Championship belt and it seems WWE had a long-term vision for that title.

The Rock was originally set to take Cody Rhodes’ place at WrestleMania 40 and face Roman Reigns in the show’s main event. But WWE fans vociferously said no to that idea and The Rock ended up joining The Bloodline as The Final Boss instead.

The Rock teamed with Roman Reigns to win the night one main event as they defeated Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins in a tag team match. That show went off the air with Reigns hoisting high his Undisputed WWE Championship belts while The Rock held aloft the People’s Championship he had been presented with at the WWE Hall of Fame.

The Rock’s People Title A WrestleMania Backup?

With many now expecting The Rock to return for WrestleMania 41 to face Cody Rhodes, it seems that the People’s Title could come into play.

Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted that the People’s Title was brought into WWE as the company didn’t know if Cody Rhodes would still be WWE Champion by the time WrestleMania 41 comes around:

One of the deals with The Rock and Cody a year ago – it was not a lock that Cody’s gonna have a one-year run (as WWE Champion). I mean, he could. But one of the things I was pretty much told was the reason they got that People’s Title thing there was a backup incase the decision is made for Cody not to go for a year (as WWE Champion).

Cody Rhodes will team with Roman Reigns at Bad Blood as the former rivals put their own issues behind them to do battle with the new look Bloodline.
