A new report has suggested several pitches have been made for NXT stars to join the WWE main roster and highlighted how the new regime handles this task.
NXT call-ups to the main roster have taken place for as long as the developmental brand has been around. Seth Rollins, Kevin Owens, Sami Zayn, Sasha Banks, Charlotte Flair, Asuka, Bayley, Becky Lynch, Alpha Academy, The Street Profits, Bray Wyatt, and even Roman Reigns all competed in NXT before going on to become bonafide superstars.
Fightful Select has now reported that pitches have been made for “numerous talent” to be called up to the main roster from the white and gold brand. A source within NXT noted that the convention of having talent from the brand compete on Main Event for evaluations is because of management’s belief that it gives a “more accurate reflection” on how the talent will connect to a main roster audience. WWE Main Event matches are often filmed before Raw and SmackDown shows.
Two names that have strongly been considered for a call-up to the main roster are Cameron Grimes and Von Wagner. WWE staff are said to have called Grimes a natural fit, touting his television experience as part of IMPACT Wrestling.
Von Wagner has competed on Main Event and was said to be considered for a call-up last year but that was obviously curtailed. The report adds that there will be “a more slow and steady flow” of NXT call-ups to the main roster with fewer “years-long evaluation periods” taking place on the developmental brand itself.
