Report Claims The Rock vs Cody Rhodes Is Off
What is going on with The Rock?
On January 6th, Monday Night Raw will debut on Netflix, and the ‘Road to WrestleMania’ will begin. While the Royal Rumble isn’t until February 1st, the very special episode of Raw is set to feature several hints about what’s to come.
The show will feature the return of John Cena who’ll begin his year-long retirement tour, while Rhea Ripley will challenge Liv Morgan for the Women’s World Title. Elsewhere, Roman Reigns faces Solo Sikoa in Tribal Combat, and Seth Rollins and CM Punk go one-on-one.
It’s long been rumoured that The Rock will be at the taping, making his first appearance since Bad Blood. However, it seems that a match with Cody Rhodes — which has been teased several times, now won’t be happening.
Uncertainty Surrounds The Rock
Writing in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reiterated earlier reports that John Cena vs. Cody Rhodes is now scheduled for WrestleMania. In theory, this would leave The Rock without a match. Despite this, “people at the top” expect The Great One to wrestle on the show.
So for WrestleMania, the reports of Rhodes vs. John Cena are accurate as things stand right now…
At first it was the Raw title given Rhodes vs. Rock would be for the other title and People’s belt. This isn’t etched in stone because whatever Rock wants to do, he’s likely going to be able to do. I do know that people are expecting him to appear on the show in some form.
As for wrestling on the show, I even know people at the top who are expecting that, but it’s not a sure thing and one would think the Netflix show on 1/6 will kick off the season and tip the hand.
While discussing Raw’s upcoming debut on Netflix which is expected to feature The Rock, Meltzer said his WrestleMania plans will likely be teased on the show.
Nobody had directly told us that Dwayne Johnson will be on the show, but I would think there’s a good shot of it. There is a belief he’s doing WrestleMania, although nobody knows what capacity and as noted, Cena vs. Rhodes is right now scheduled meaning the original plans for Rhodes vs. Rock are off.
But whatever Rock wants to do will happen and plans will change if he wants them to. Whatever Rock is going to do, if he’ll have a prominent role, one would expect to be teased on 1/6
It’s been reported elsewhere that Roman Reigns could face CM Punk at WrestleMania with the latter said to be hoping for the bout. In speculation stretching back several years, a match between Rock and Reigns has routinely been discussed.
