Paul Heyman Knew Roman Reigns Was “Natural Matchup” For Brock Lesnar
Paul Heyman knew that the collision between Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar would see the pair “go down in history intertwined together”.
Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar have competed against each other nine times, including three WrestleMania Main Events.
Reigns has now headlined WrestleMania on an incredible seven occasions and has now surpassed 1,000 days as Undisputed Universal WWE Champion.
The pair are also the only two men to have defeated The Undertaker at WrestleMania, with Lesnar ending The Dead Man’s Unbeaten Streak.
As two of the most decorated Superstars of all time, the long-term feud was a “natural matchup” according to the man who has stood ringside as an Advocate and a Wiseman.
Paul Heyman claims that Reigns and Lesnar rivalry is the modern-day version of The Rock v Stone Cold Steve Austin, and that the pair will now be connected together in history.
The Wiseman was appearing as a guest on Tetragrammaton with Rick Rubin, and spoke of his confidence in the rivalry being a success, whilst also sharing insight into how this allowed Reigns to become more of a breakout star.
“So I had known Roman’s family for so many years, and I could tell that this was a natural matchup for Brock Lesnar. This was Macho Man to Hogan. This was Rock to Austin.
This was just the rivalry, the two that would go down in history intertwined together. They just matched up so well.
So Roman and I had talked about it because Roman always, much like Brock understanding the cap of his money in 2004, Roman understood the cap of The Big Dog as a personality.
Roman understood that the presentation of The Big Dog Roman Reigns, as much as he could make it his own, was always going to be the corporate structure produced talent.,”
Heyman shared who he was originally set to be paired with before Lesnar, but would also go on to compare Reigns to Music Legend George Michael, who broke free of corporate ownership to have freedom in creating music.
“I’ll even reference a piece of music that Rick Rubin didn’t produce. George Michael, Freedom 90. That’s Roman Reigns.
The whole thing about George Michael singing, they wanted my eyes this color, they wanted me to sing this way. This is how the labels wanted to present me because that was the marketing, that was the exploitation of my intellectual property.
But as an artist, I want the freedom to soar or sink on my own and with my own merits. With my real colored eyes, with the way that I really look and dress and present myself and approach my art and music. Roman Reigns always had a vision of something past The Big Dog, but he was still too young,”
WWE celebrated Roman Reigns reaching 1,000 days as Undisputed Champion during the June 2nd edition of SmackDown, which delivered huge ratings for the company.
After being defeated by Roman Reigns at last year’s SummerSlam, Brock Lesnar is no longer allowed to challenge for the Universal Championship whilst it remains around the waist of Reigns.
The night after WrestleMania 39, Lesnar joined forces with Cody Rhodes to take on Reigns and Solo Sikoa, but before the match got underway, Lesnar attached The American Nightmare and is now embroiled in a summer long battle with Rhodes.
