Only John Cena Can Break One WWE Golden Rule

John Cena is still the face that runs the place.

Whether loved or loathed, John Cena remains one of the biggest stars the wrestling industry has ever seen. After beginning his WWE career just as The Rock and Steve Austin were on their way out, Cena quickly became the company’s top man — a position he held for over a decade.

In 2024, things are a little different. It’s now Cena who is winding down and he’s announced his intention to retire at the end of 2025. Starting with Raw’s planned move to Netflix in January, Cena will embark on a year-long retirement tour as he says goodbye to the business that made him a megastar.

Since the announcement, stars both past and present have been lining up to take one more shot at the 16-time World Champion. However, given Cena’s importance and star power, it’s likely he’ll be the one to decide who he shares the ring with.

Cody Rhodes Lifts The Lid On John Cena’s Influence

Not only will Cena likely be allowed to select his final opponents, but his status means he can also be a little more flexible with WWE rules than others.

During an interview with SPORTbible, WWE Champion Cody Rhodes, revealed that Cena is the only person allowed to talk directly into the camera. Cena gesturing to cameraman Stu has been a staple of his entrances for several years.

“When I went away and came back I was allowed to bring everything back with me, including breaking a lot of the pre-existing rules.

We’re out of the frame of looking at monitors sideways now. You know, what’s still a pretty big on-air rule but it’s good for production purposes, is not to talk into the camera.

That’s John’s thing. John looks at the camera and mentions Stu the cameraman, runs to the ring. I don’t want to see anyone, including myself, do it – and I probably have done at some point.

But that’s his (thing) and that’s the reason why it’s a rule – until somebody beats him and then it’s his.”

Cody Rhodes will be back in action at Crown Jewel on November 2nd, where he faces World Heavyweight Champion Gunther. The winner will be crowned the first-ever Crown Jewel Champion.
