NXT Star Reveals Why They Have Not Been Called Up To The Main Roster

NXT Carmelo Hayes

Carmelo Hayes recalled a conversation with Shawn Michaels regarding his arrival on the main roster.

The NXT Champion has been seen in the front row of Raw and SmackDown tapings and put on an impressive showing against Finn Balor in his first main roster match on June 26th. With multiple main roster appearances occurring in June, it looked as if Hayes may be soon making the jump to Raw or SmackDown and dropping the NXT title. However, Hayes has since returned to Tuesday nights and still reigns as the top champion.

So why has Hayes remained in NXT? The answer to the question was provided by Melo himself while speaking with The Messenger, where Hayes revealed that Shawn Michaels wants to build up the NXT Champion more before progressing to the next stage:

“He gave me a really good analogy – ‘I don’t want you to start building your roof when you haven’t laid the groundwork yet. You’re already trying to put in your windows and you haven’t even finished doing your thing. That’s where we’re at now. I was like, ‘Yeah, let me continue to build brick by brick by brick. When I’m able to get to that point where it’s time to put a roof on this thing, I’ll go to the main roster and start building that roof.”

Melo would state that the analogy was about “not getting ahead of yourself.” Hayes will defend the NXT Championship against Ilja Dragunov at No Mercy on September 30th.
