NJPW Star Wishes There Was More Buildup To AEW Match With Kenny Omega
One NJPW star wasn’t happy with the build to his first-ever singles clash with Kenny Omega.
The March 29th episode of AEW Dynamite saw then-IWGP United States Champion Kenny Omega successfully defend his title against NJPW star Jeff Cobb. The bout marked Omega’s first title defense in nearly three months, but due to being on opposite sides of the world, the two couldn’t build to the bout in person on either NJPW or AEW television.
Speaking in an interview with WrestleInn, Jeff Cobb opened up about his return to AEW and admitted that the build to his first-ever singles bout with Omega wasn’t all he hoped it would be.
“I wish there was a little bit more buildup to it, but I understand that me being in Japan, and especially, I think we were in the height of the New Japan Cup, so we have a three-week-long tournament to get a new contender, and it’s not like Omega could have flown back and forth or been part of the New Japan Cup because he had stuff going on. I think he was in a trios feud at that time, so it’s like he’s got stuff going on, I’ve got stuff going on.”
“We Did The Best With What We Were Given” – Jeff Cobb On AEW Bout With Kenny Omega
Continuing, Cobb said that he and Kenny Omega did the best they could under the circumstances and did what they could to deliver in the ring.
“So the best thing I could do was just talk a little smack and hopefully people would have picked it up online and then run with it. So we did the best we could with what we were given. Hopefully, it delivered match-wise and buildup wise. But I would have preferred a little bit bigger buildup, but that’s what we were dealt with, and that’s what we ran with.”
