Will Nigel McGuinness Continue To Wrestle In AEW?
Nigel McGuinness isn’t ready to close the book on his in-ring career.
At AEW All In Nigel McGuinness shocked the world by returning to the ring for the first time since 2011. In front of a raucous Wembley crowd, the British star rolled back the years as he took part in the Casino Gauntlet Match.
McGuinness had repeatedly been linked with one more match against Bryan Danielson, but that dream appeared to disappear when Danielson announced his intention to retire. However, at Grand Slam the pair got to wrestle one more time with the American Dragon earning the win.
Although that match appears to have given McGuinness a storybook ending to his in-ring career, now he’s proved he can still perform, could more matches be on the horizon?
Nigel McGuinness Admits Wrestling Career Could Continue
During an appearance on Talk Is Jericho, McGuinness reflected on his unexpected career renaissance and admitted that while he’s at peace with never wrestling again, he’s “open to the possibility.”
There’s always a chance (I could wrestle again) and certainly now that I’ve realized — I don’t wanna say it’s not as difficult as I thought it was because it is obviously very difficult. But I think I didn’t give myself enough credit for being able to do it and I think I listened to too many people….
I’m at that stage now where I feel eternally blessed to have been able to get back in the ring and I love it, I enjoy it. But not just the being in the ring. Just today, I was out there in the ring rolling around, you know? And Lee Moriarty and Bryan Keith… We get (in) and we do a little bit, learn a little bit of stuff and I learn as much from them as they do from me as well.
So just being physically active and I think it gives you more of a visceral sense when you’re doing commentary. Because otherwise, I would have had to cast my mind back what? 11? 12? 13 years to remember what it felt like to get kicked in the face? Now I know. I only have to cast my mind back two weeks.
So it’s there and so, certainly I’m open to the possibility but if I don’t wrestle again, that’s okay as well. As I said, I’ve had closure and we’ll see what happens, right? What dreams may come.
Speaking elsewhere, Nigel McGuinness hit back at claims he was forced to retire in 2011 due to injury and concussion-related issues. The star said he was effectively forced into retirement because he was unable to make enough money with ROH and didn’t want to return to TNA.
