New SmackDown Match Confirmed For WWE SummerSlam
WWE has added another championship match to its blockbuster card for SummerSlam!
On June 9th, Charlotte Flair returned to SmackDown for the first time since her loss to Rhea Ripley at WrestleMania 39. Her return came as Asuka was being presented with a brand new WWE Women’s Championship belt, ending the Raw- and SmackDown-branding of the women’s titles.
Flair confronted Asuka and issued a challenge, declaring that she wanted to be champion once again. Flair rejected Adam Pearce saying she needed to get in line for a shot at Asuka’s title, saying she is the line.
Former Raw Women’s Champion Bianca Belair took issue with this challenge, wanting a rematch for herself after her historic championship reign ended at Night of Champions. Taking to social media after Flair’s return, Belair wrote:
“Been processing what went down last night. So let me get this straight. I did exactly what was asked of me. I agreed to let Asuka have her moment as long as I got my REMATCH JUST for Charlotte to come out, demand and get handed a REMATCH? Am I trippin or am I trippin?
Well apparently we have rematches for different titles… So… Problem solve @ScrapDaddyAP”
The championship match between Flair and Asuka ahead of Money in the Bank ended in a no contest, and since that time, tension between all three women has continued to build on television. Now, WWE have made a triple threat match for the WWE Women’s Championship official for the upcoming SummerSlam PLE in Detroit, writing on Twitter:
“BREAKING: WWE Women’s Champion @WWEAsuka will defend her coveted championship against @BiancaBelairWWE AND @MsCharlotteWWE in a Triple Threat Match as #SummerSlam live at @fordfield in Detroit!”
