New Report Dismisses John Cena Theory
Why did John Cena lose to Brock Lesnar in such a brutal fashion?
At Wrestlepalooza, Brock Lesnar destroyed John Cena in his first match since losing to Cody Rhodes at SummerSlam 2023.
The nature of the loss was a surprise to many, and the head-scratching only increased when it was claimed that Cena was originally scheduled to win the match, and the finish was only changed in the hours before the event.
Writing in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer dismissed the idea that Lesnar was ever going to lose his first match in two years. He noted that while the subject of Cena winning might have been briefly mentioned, there was never a serious discussion.
“We were told that was not the case, and that Lesnar was not brought back to lose his first match. There are always discussions, and the idea may have been broached for Cena to win, as most expected, but it was never a serious discussion or ever the planned finish.”
Meltzer explained that the idea was to make Lesnar look as strong as possible as he moves into his next storyline. Something that was possible in this scenario, as Cena is viewed as “bulletproof” and someone where losses won’t impact his character.
It’s believed that the long-term strategy is to establish Lesnar as a monster to be slayed by a younger, rising star.
“The match was all about making Lesnar as strong as possible, getting a last match with Cena, and the feeling Cena more than anyone, is bulletproof no matter what they do with him.”
John Cena Making Quick Return To Action
As his retirement moves ever closer, it’s been announced that John Cena will be back in action at Crown Jewel in Perth, Australia, on October 11. At the event, Cena will face AJ Styles for one final time and the pair begged Triple H for the match on social media.
One report suggested that the online nature of the build was because of Cena’s limited number of remaining televised dates.
Meanwhile, AJ Styles has announced that he’s planning to retire in 2026 after what he hopes will be one final appearance at WrestleMania.
