New AEW Trademark Likely Leading To Unique Match Type
A trademark filed by AEW likely means the company is going to try doing a very unique match.
At the first AEW pay-per-view of the year called Revolution this past March, the company planned on doing a match called Meat Madness. The idea behind the match is to have bigger wrestlers in the ring hitting each other hard, which results in “Meat” chants from the crowd.
AEW’s Owner, President and matchmaker Tony Khan postponed the match because he wanted certain wrestlers to be involved but they were unavailable at the time. Khan explained why he had to change plans.
“I wanted to put a lot of the big wrestlers and get the crowd fired up for a multi-man scramble, a Meat Madness match. I think the crowd would enjoy it and it would be a lot of fun, but some of the wrestlers I was hoping to use….right now, Miro and Keith Lee are both out.
Neither one is available, and some of our big men being out injured, I wanted to have the depth in the field to do the match I originally envisioned and people would enjoy that,
Since we didn’t necessarily have the depth and we’re missing some of our big guys to do the Meat Madness multi-man scramble, we have other great stars and rivalries to showcase, so I made it an All-Star Scramble.
When we get all of our big men healthy at the same time, I still want to take the Meat Madness concept off the shelf, get it out of the freezer, thaw it out, but until then I put Meat Madness on ice.”
While Meat Madness didn’t happen at Revolution like Tony Khan wanted, it has been reported that AEW has trademarked the term “Meat Mayhem” which will likely be used for a future match.
Both wrestlers mentioned by Kahn above, Miro & Keith Lee, are still under contract with AEW, but both men have been out of action for a long time.
Tony Khan Believes That People Don’t Want AEW To Succeed
During an interview where he spoke about the state of AEW, Tony Khan believes that many people within pro wrestling don’t want All Elite Wrestling to succeed.
“We’ve done over 250 episodes now on Wednesday nights, and doing this every week on TV is something that I’m very well aware of. It’s a great thing for everybody that we can do this for all the people who work here and for all the fans. Pro wrestling is a 52-week-a-year business.
It’s a very, very challenging grind, and I love it….. I think that it is difficult to be the challenger brand, and there are great examples of this. I think Voices of Wrestling, in particular, has done a great job covering these things in general, and I think it will come under scrutiny for almost anything I say.
I think AEW is a great company, and there are a lot of people out there who don’t want to see it succeed and spend a lot of time trying to stop it. But that’s the fight that basically every challenger wrestling promotion has fought for decades, and it’s great standing here right now.”
It’s not known when AEW will be doing the “Meat Mayhem” match, but it’s possible it could be at the upcoming AEW All In PPV on August 25th at Wembley Stadium in London, England.
