NBC Could Prevent WWE From Countering AEW
Plans for John Cena’s WWE farewell are coming together.
In December, John Cena will bring down the curtain on his long and illustrious career.
Although a mid-December date was initially rumoured, it was recently reported that John Cena’s retirement will take place on December 27 as a way of going head-to-head with AEW Worlds End.
But despite those claims, a new report via Wrestle Votes Radio has suggested that a Saturday Night’s Main Event special on December 13 is the likely destination for Cena’s retirement.
“After asking around about the rumor dates for John Cena’s last match, we’re told NBC’s preferred choice is Saturday night, December 13.”
The report added that NBC’s NFL commitments mean that a show on December 27 is unlikely.
“December 27 remains an option, although unlikely, as NBC has already an NFL contractual obligation with an exclusive game on Peacock that night, and they’d rather not compete with themselves, according to a source, while 12/27 does line up with AEW World End pay-per-view, something WWE could and would like to counter.
Sources doubt it will be chosen because of the NFL obligations on NBC’s part.”
The report added that regardless of the date, Cena’s last match is still expected to take place at the TD Garden in Boston.
John Cena Remains Adamant He Won’t Choose Last WWE Opponent
During an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, John Cena reiterated that he’s content to let WWE put together his retirement match. In recent weeks, Cena has repeatedly stated that he’s never chosen his own opponents, and he’s not going to start now.
Next up for Cena will be a battle with Brock Lesnar after the star made a surprise appearance at SummerSlam. In the moments before the show went off the air, Lesnar destroyed Cena with an F-5.
It’s believed that John Cena vs. Brock Lesnar will headline a Premium Live Event on September 20. That event will go head-to-head with AEW All Out.
