Mustafa Ali’s Replacement For No Mercy Confirmed
A new number one contender has been announced for the NXT North American Championship following Mustafa Ali’s departure.
A 4-way match took place between Trick Williams, Dragon Lee, Axiom and Tyler Bate to determine who would face champion Dominik Mysterio at the No Mercy Premium Live Event. The match was won by Williams, who looked to have inadvertently pinned Axiom to win the match.
While Mysterio feels confident that he will remain the champion when all is said and done, his latest title defence will not be that straightforward. Later in the night, it was announced that Dragon Lee would serve as the special guest referee for the championship match on September 30th. Lee and Ali originally faced off in a number one contenders match on the September 5th broadcast with the North American Champion acting as guest referee. Ali would win the match when The Judgment Day member provided a fast count, much to the anger of Lee.
Dragon Lee would have defended the North American Championship if he was victorious on the September 23rd episode of Raw, where he challenged Mysterio for the title. Due to “Dirty” Dom still remaining champion, The Judgment Day member made history on the show with his latest defence.
Mustafa Ali Announces WWE Departure
Wrestling fans were shocked on September 21st when Ali announced that he had left the company, being the first of many releases over the next 24 hours. No one expected Ali’s release at the time as he was scheduled to face Mysterio at No Mercy. The sudden departure of Ali was what necessitated the 4-way match on the go-home episode of NXT.
