Mick Foley Had Secret Meeting With AEW Star To Plan Retirement Match
Mick Foley had no shortage of options when it came to planning a retirement match.
Back in January, Mick Foley revealed he’d lost 100lbs after making plans to get back in the ring. The Hardcore Legend initially wanted to wrestle in one last match to celebrate his 60th birthday, and that involved getting back in shape.
However, Foley’s plans for a retirement match were scrapped after he suffered a concussion while training. He reasoned that while he could likely still get through a match, he’d likely undo all of the work he’s done in recent years to improve his health in the process.
Foley hasn’t wrestled since making a cameo in the 2012 Royal Rumble match, and hasn’t competed in a singles match since losing to Ric Flair in a Last Man Standing Match with TNA back in 2010. There had been talk of the star wrestling at SummerSlam 2012, but doctors refused to clear him to perform.
Mick Foley Laid Out Six-Week Plan With AEW Star
During an interview on The Wrestling Classic, Foley gave fans an insight into his aborted comeback, revealing just how close a match came to happening. The former World Champion broke down a secret meeting he had with MJF, where they came up with a six-week storyline.
“I had a top secret meeting with MJF about the possibility of having one last match with him, and he laid out like six really solid weeks of storytelling. Two Long Island guys meeting at a steakhouse, and we didn’t even take a photo of the situation, but it was cool.”
Foley went on to say that when he began to approach the possibility of one more match, there was “no shortage” of wrestlers open to working with him. He noted that this covered several people from Karrion Kross to MJF, and death match wrestlers.
The WWE Hall of Famer added that he’s confident that a match with MJF would have worked, and even if it didn’t, they could have convinced fans that it did.
“He’s so good and such a great Pro that… he would have lifted my game on the microphone. We could have probably found a way to work around my weaknesses in the ring… accentuate the positives. And even if it wasn’t a great match, I bet you, we could have convinced a lot of people it was a great match.”
During a different interview, Mick Foley admitted he regretted never having long-term feuds with Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart. The Hardcore legend did reflect fondly on his famous match with Michaels at Mind Games, but wished it could have built to something more substantial.
