Mick Foley Reflects On Clashing With Vince McMahon Over Last Raw GM Promo
During an exclusive interview while on tour in the UK for Inside the Ropes in December 2019, WWE Hall of Famer and Hardcore Legend Mick Foley went into the details of his final days as Raw General Manager in 2017, shedding light on the behind-the-scenes drama and the creative process that led to his departure as GM. Foley candidly expressed his desire for a fitting conclusion to his role.
All I wanted was for a proper firing, the firing itself was good, and the week before was one of the best things I think I’ve done in the last 10 years. We were at a crossroads, the way it was written, there’s no grey areas – she (Stephanie) is bad, I’m good, and I said there’s no room for growth here, there’s nothing interesting here.
In an attempt to infuse more depth into the storyline, Foley sought to persuade WWE Chairman Vince McMahon to reconsider certain aspects of the narrative leading up to his character’s exit, but his efforts were met with resistance.
I tried telling Vince that the real heat comes when you believe in her a little bit, but there’s more heat if it turns out Stephanie has been playing me the whole time. ‘I’m sorry Mick, I just don’t see it that way’.
However, Stephanie McMahon took matters into her own hands and collaborated with Foley to create a spontaneous backstage promo that injected realism and intensity into the narrative.
When I got outta the room, Stephanie was there and she said let’s do it our way. And so we cut our promo without any rehearsals or verbiage, kinda a renegade backstage promo.
The unexpected turn of events culminated in Vince McMahon witnessing the promo and ultimately acceding to their vision.
We rejoiced, we really felt like we fought for something and even if the role wasn’t perfect it got us to a point where it meant something for the Triple H vs. Seth Rollins match and I got what I wanted which was a really good firing.
This pivotal episode marked the culmination of Foley’s tenure as Raw General Manager, as he was eventually relieved of his duties by Stephanie McMahon on March 20, 2017, paving the way for Kurt Angle to assume the role.
