Mercedes Moné Captivated By AEW Champion
Mercedes Mone has been watching a championship wrestler in AEW for a long time.
As the TBS Champion, Mercedes Mone has won nearly every match she has had in AEW. It’s been an impressive run for Mone, who spent over a decade in WWE as Sasha Banks before choosing to move on and go to AEW.
In the Women’s Owen Hart Foundation Tournament, Mercedes Mone has reached the finals. There, she will face off against former AEW Women’s Champion Jamie Hayter. The Mone-Hayter match will take place at AEW Double or Nothing on May 25th.
Whoever wins the Mone-Hayter match will face “Timeless” Toni Storm for the AEW World Title at All In Texas on July 12th.
A matchup between Mone and Storm has been teased with some long distance staredowns between the two women, but Hayter has also been involved to remind Mone that Hayter will be tough to beat.
Toni Storm’s Work Blows Away Mercedes Mone
While speaking to Denise Salcedo of Instinct Culture, Mercedes Mone expressed her fondness for Storm, a four-time AEW Women’s World Champion who has held that title more than anybody.
“I am blown away by her work. Before I even thought about signing with AEW, I was watching Toni weeks upon weeks, and I was so captivated by her charisma, character, and presence. I think she is not only one of the best women, (she is) one of the best talents in the whole world.
I’ve never seen a woman captivate a character so on demand like she does. She brings so much to AEW, and I can’t wait to take that all away from her [laughs].”
Mercedes Mone suffered a rare defeat when she defended the NJPW Strong Women’s Title against Mina Shirakawa and AZM at NJPW Resurgence in Ontario, California.
It was a match that featured many quick pin attempts in the final moments until AZM pinned Shirakawa to win the title. Mone held the NJPW Strong Women’s Title for 313 days but only defended it four times.
