Mercedes Mone Begging AEW To Do More With Overlooked Star
Mercedes Mone has sent a message to AEW management.
On the April 16 edition of AEW Dynamite, Mercedes Mone and Athena finally met in the ring. At the time, Mone was holding three championships from promotions around the world, and Athena remains the longest-reigning Ring of Honor Champion in history with her iron grip on the women’s title.
The bout had been years in the making, and the semi-finals of the Owen Hart Cup provided a fitting occasion.
In front of an enthusiastic crowd, it was Mone who grabbed a hard-earned victory, but the match hasn’t been easily forgotten.
Mercedes Mone Wants AEW To Elevate Athena
Despite hopes from many fans that she would now be a regular on AEW television, Athena has headed back to Ring of Honor following her defeat to Mone. While this means that those fans have been left disappointed, it seems they aren’t the only ones.
In an interview with Justin Barrasso for Undisputed, Mone looked back on the match and called on AEW to use her rival more often.
“That match, it was so f*cking cool, Athena gave me hell. I’ve never experienced anyone like her in the ring.
Athena has been doing it for so long. I was watching her before I was even signed to WWE. I want to see her on AEW television more. She’s too good not to be seen. She’s explosive — one of the best, innovative wrestlers in the world. She is that f*cking good.”
With victory over Athena, Mone advanced to the final, where she’ll face Jamie Hayter at Double or Nothing. Hayter is on her own mission for redemption after losing the Women’s Championship at the event two years ago after suffering a significant back injury.
Mone vs. Hayter is another first-time-ever match-up, but The CEO is already looking to a potential third with current champion “Timeless” Toni Storm.
“I’ve never wrestled Jamie. I’m so excited. First Athena, now Jamie — the Owen Cup is going to be one of the best tournaments in the world.
And I’ve never got to wrestle Toni Storm before, except for a little three-way. Wrestling Toni Storm, that’s a match I’ve been waiting to wrestle for a very, very long time.”
In the final of the men’s tournament, “Hangman” Adam Page will square off against Will Ospreay. The winner of each final will earn a shot at their respective World Championship at All In Texas in July.
