Mercedes Mone Names AEW All Out Match That Stole The Show
Mercedes Mone has chosen one match that stood out to her at AEW All Out.
At AEW All Out in Chicago, Mercedes Mone continued her dominant run as the TBS Champion by beating former AEW Women’s Champion Hikaru Shida. Haters can’t even complain about it because Mone didn’t get any help from Kamille and won clean with a Mone Maker slam.
While the Mone/Shida match likely won’t be remembered as a classic battle, Mercedes praised another women’s match on the show.
There was a grudge match at AEW All Out featuring Kris Statlander and Willow Nightingale was a Street Fight that saw the two women creatively use a lot of weapons throughout the match. Statlander won the violent battle by putting a chain around Willow’s neck/mouth and forced Willow to quit.
Mercedes Mone wrote in her Mone Mag newsletter that the Statlander/Nightingale match “stole the show,” which is a phrase that wrestlers often use to emphasize outstanding matches.
“After sharing some strong thoughts on extreme wrestling, I’ll state, hands down, Kris Statlander and Willow Nightingale’s street fight absolutely stole the show. It was one of the best women’s matches of the year, and one of the greatest women’s street matches I have ever seen-ever! I mean it. I couldn’t take my eyes off the monitor. Kris and Willow hooked me from go. Our women’s division just keeps ascending.”
The Statlander/Nightingale match was so great that the Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer rated it ****3/4, which is an impressive score on what is sometimes called a five-star scale even though Meltzer goes over it, especially for Will Ospreay matches. It also makes it one of the highest rated women’s matches in AEW history.
Mercedes Mone Thinks It’s Important To Cater To AEW Fans Who Want Violence
In the same newsletter mentioned above, Mercedes Mone wrote more about the AEW All Out PPV by talking about the violence on the show. There was a brutal Adam Page/Swerve Strickland match that saw them use cinderblocks, needles, and sharp pieces of wood. All Out also saw Jon Moxley cheaply attack AEW World Champion Bryan Danielson and put a plastic bag over his head.
According to Mone, a company like AEW has to cater to different types of fans, so that’s what they do.
“All Out was extremely violent, and honestly, Daniel Bryan’s stuff was tough to watch. I have mixed emotions. When done right, that kind of stuff can tear a roof off like Daniel’s did. However, I wouldn’t want my brother Joshua to watch stuff like that, or kids, for that matter. Let’s face it, wrestling is multi-generational. When I do signings, I greet so many parents and their children.
Growing up, I didn’t have a father, so it especially warms my heart to meet families and hear how much their wrestling viewing experiences and memories mean to them. Then again, there is an audience that loves the extreme, and you want to cater to them, too.”
The next AEW PPV is WrestleDream on October 12. It’s not yet known who Mercedes Mone will wrestle on the show, but as one of AEW’s biggest stars, it’s likely she’ll be at the event in some capacity.
