Matt Hardy has given his thoughts on Cody Rhodes winning WWE’s Royal Rumble while noting that he was very happy for his friend.

Cody Rhodes picked up the biggest win of his wrestling career so far at the Royal Rumble last Saturday when he won the Men’s Royal Rumble match.

It was Cody’s first match in seven months after suffering a torn pectoral muscle last June. Cody entered the Royal Rumble as the #30 entrant, he made it until the end against Intercontinental Champion GUNTHER and Cody dumped him out with a clothesline to win the match.

On this week’s episode of the Extreme Life of Matt Hardy podcast, Matt Hardy was asked about Cody Rhodes winning the Royal Rumble match while talking about their history working together in AEW.

“I was very proud of him. Obviously, I got to spend a lot of time with Cody whenever we did the pandemic, we’re in Jacksonville for 18 months. We got to know everybody pretty well because we were there for extended amounts of time, especially doing Dark tapings till 2am-3am in the morning sometimes, so it was cool man.”

As Matt Hardy continued, he also thinks it was good for the pro wrestling business that Cody was the first major star in wrestling to jump from AEW to WWE.

“I thought Cody killed it when he first came into WWE and I think him leaving AEW and going to WWE, the first major jump from an AEW to WWE deal. I think it’s good for business. I think it’s good for interest. I think it’s good for wrestling fans. I think it’s good for just the entire business in general.”

Matt Hardy added that he thought Cody was the right choice to win the Rumble match.

“So I was very happy for him to come back and I was happy that he won the Royal Rumble and I think he was the guy that should have won the Royal Rumble. I liked that they went that direction, and I’m really interested to see what him and Roman are gonna do at Mania.”

Thanks to his Royal Rumble win, Cody Rhodes will get to challenge Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship at WrestleMania 39 on April 1st or April 2nd. If not Roman then it’s whoever is the champion going into WrestleMania. (It will probably be Roman.)
