Matt Cardona Reveals Unknown Details About WWE Comeback

Matt Cardona surprised the WWE Universe with a comeback this past week

Matt Cardona (FKA Zack Ryder) made a surprising return to WWE under his indie wrestling name on the January 2nd episode of SmackDown. The star faced Kit Wilson in a match and defeated him after executing his finishing move, the Rough Ryder (a name he formerly used when he was Zack Ryder in WWE).

The Former WWE Intercontinental Champion has been working in the independent wrestling circuit as a top heel since 2021, following his release from WWE in April 2020.

Matt Cardona Details His WWE Comeback

Zack Ryder fans were in for a treat when they heard Matt Cardona’s music hit and saw him run down to the ring for his latest WWE match with Kit Wilson. Fans are excited to have him back on WWE TV.

Cardona spoke to The Major Wrestling Figure podcast about his return and revealed how talks of his return with WWE began, especially after his match with LA Knight on a November episode of SmackDown, where he was shockingly revealed to be Knight’s mystery opponent. Cardona got the call when he was at dinner after the match.

After the SmackDown thing with LA Knight, that’s kind of when the ball got rolling, right? That’s when there were discussions like, ‘Oh, we’ll be in touch, blah blah blah.

I was at dinner after we had the match. I left and went and took a phone call. That’s when I got the call – like, ‘Hey, you know, we’re interested. Let’s start talking.’ I was like, ‘Oh boy – all right, here we go.

So it was very stressful in a good way — not bad stress — but still like, is this going to happen? Is this not going to happen? Just the particulars. “And then finally, it got signed Christmas week. So it was very sudden. And then it’s like, okay — am I Zack? Am I Matt? So I’m having both sets of gear made and designed.

Cardona admits to having committed to not being seen to shield the surprise return to WWE he would make on January 2nd by flying into a different airport and hiding in a room all day.

Even that day going to SmackDown – SmackDown was in Buffalo, so I flew into Rochester so no one would see me at the airport. Then I was hidden in a room all day. I was like, ‘Oh—I just want the news to be out there.
