A former World Champion will soon be back in a WWE ring.

At SummerSlam, Gunther put the World Heavyweight Championship on the line against CM Punk in the main event of night one.

Despite dominating much of the contest, it was Punk who got the win, claiming his first World Championship victory in more than a decade. However, that elation wasn’t meant to last as just minutes later, Seth Rollins cashed in his Money In The Bank contract to beat Punk and escape with the gold.

Following the event, it was reported that Gunther had undergone surgery on his nose, and he hasn’t been seen on television since.

Gunther Closing On WWE Return

As reported by Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the Austrian star is expected back “very soon.”

In another injury boost, it was recently claimed that Gunther’s long-time rival Ilja Dragunov will also be back in the fold in the coming weeks. Dragunov has been out of action since suffering a torn ACL during a match with Gunther at a live event in September 2024.

According to the report, Dragunov has been training hard at the Performance Center and could be in line for a storyline with Rusev.

WWE also reportedly has big plans for Rey Mysterio when he makes his own return from injury. Mysterio has been missing since tearing his groin 24 hours before his planned match with El Grande Americano at WrestleMania 41.
