A former WWE Champion Adds Fire to Cody Rhodes’ SummerSlam Build

The July 4 edition of WWE SmackDown saw Drew McIntyre make his surprise return. This marked his first appearance since Saturday Night’s Main Event, and he wasted no time stirring the pot. With Randy Orton and Cody Rhodes sharing the ring, McIntyre crashed the party and brought a whole new layer to their ongoing tension.

Grabbing the mic, McIntyre mocked both men for what he called “beta male energy,” claiming that the real alpha had returned, ‘himself.’ He immediately accused Cody Rhodes of using mind games and manipulation to throw Orton off his game at the King of the Ring tournament finals. Drew didn’t mince words, calling out Cody for allegedly exploiting Orton’s trust and capitalizing on his surgically repaired back to steal a win.

Drew McIntyre Accuses Cody Rhodes of Manipulation

On a recent episode of Notsam Wrestling, Sam Roberts broke down McIntyre’s fiery promo, stating that McIntyre may have exposed Cody Rhodes’ true intentions. This is what he said:

“Drew shows up and he says a couple of things, you know, he talks about Randy hesitating, he talks about this, he talks about that, but then he starts getting into Cody, right? And he’s trying to get into Randy’s head. Obviously, he’s saying that Cody’s been buttering up Randy Orton like a good politician.”

“Cody was the whole time trying to take Randy off his game. He’s basically saying that Cody was using his friendship with Randy Orton to manipulate Randy. That Cody did not care about Randy as much as Cody was letting on.”

“He knew that Randy believed that Cody and Randy were friends and therefore if he was nice to him, if he acted like, you know, Randy Orton was a part of his family, that Randy Orton might hesitate.”

“He’s basically taking all those things that make Cody Rhodes a good guy and saying that Cody was only acting like that to get the victory, which would make him a bad guy.” [33:46 – 34:26]

Roberts added that with McIntyre’s character being known for telling the truth despite being a heel, The American Nightmare could be exposed down the line for committing what The Scottish Warrior accused him of, leading to his anticipated heel turn.

Now that McIntyre is in the mix, this summer just got a lot more interesting.
