Kurt Angle Reflects On WWE Nightmare That Put Him In Hospital

Kurt Angle

Kurt Angle has conflicting thoughts on a legendary match.

Although he had already won the World Championship as well as European and Intercontinental gold, Kurt Angle was less than two years into his WWE career by the time King of the Ring 2001 rolled around.

At the event, Angle was looking to defend his King of the Ring crown while he’d also become involved in a rivalry with Shane McMahon. This meant that on a main card consisting of just seven matches, Angle was in three of them.

While Angle eventually lost to Edge in the finals of the famous tournament, it was his match with McMahon that went down in history. The stunningly violent Street Fight saw both men throw caution to the wind as Angle tried to throw McMahon through a series of glass panels that made up the stage. Famously the glass initially failed to break, and McMahon landed high on his head and neck.

Despite the problems and the ones that followed the ‘Boy Wonder’ insisted Angle keep trying until the stunts worked. Not that Vince McMahon was especially happy with how everything played out.

Kurt Angle Says Famous WWE Match Was “A Nightmare”

During an appearance on the NotSam Wrestling podcast, Angle looked back on his match with McMahon and their subsequent night in the hospital.

“That was a nightmare. We both ended up in the hospital that night—we were so stupid. We’re in the hospital high-fiving each other, we’re both crippled. And you know, I’m looking back today and thinking, we were so dumb, but we were so happy because we tore the house down.”

“I always hear, ‘You know, my favorite match of yours was you versus Shane. His head kept hitting the concrete, I could hear it.’ And I was like, ‘Shane, we got to move on.’ He’s like, ‘No, throw me through that glass.’”

“And I’m like, ‘Shane, it’s not working.’ What happened was, it was supposed to be sugar glass. But it was plexiglass. So, we were going through real glass.”

During the same interview, Kurt Angle said the way his WWE return in 2017 was handled was a form of punishment for the nature of his departure in 2006.
