Kurt Angle Knows His Infamous WWE Meme Moment Was Horrible
Kurt Angle has commented on a famous WWE Raw moment that became a meme.
After spending more than a decade working for TNA Wrestling, Kurt Angle returned “home” to WWE in 2017, which led to a Hall of Fame induction and a return to the ring.
On the road to WrestleMania 34 in 2018, Kurt Angle was part of a storyline that saw him team up with a debuting Ronda Rousey against Triple H and Stephanie McMahon.
The February 26, 2018 edition of WWE Monday Night Raw saw Angle & Rousey in an in-ring segment with Triple H and Stephanie. After the two sides had a discussion, Triple H teased leaving, but instead, the dastardly heel gave Angle a cheap shot punch to the head. Before the punch, Angle puffed out his cheeks as if to breathe a sigh of relief after what was discussed. That image of Angle standing there while Triple H wound up for a punch became a popular meme in the years that followed.
During a recent interview with Sam Roberts on NotSam, Kurt Angle admitted he did it on purpose while laughing and admitting that it was horrible.
“I did that on purpose. I went [breathes out], and I overexaggerated so Triple H had time to hit me. But it was so bad, it looked like I didn’t plan it. It was horrible [laughs]. That was a pro wrestling gimmick. That’s what pro wrestlers would do. It’s like when they sell, when they get hit in the stomach, and they turn around in a circle and come back to you. It’s like why would they be turning in a circle? Just sell it. But me, I was doing the [breathes out] ‘Hit me, hit me, hit me.’ [Laughs].”
Kurt Angle Enjoyed The Fame From Being A Meme
The discussion continued with the Olympic Gold Medal winning wrestler admitting that he enjoyed being known as a meme guy.
“I’ve been out of the mix for years. This meme comes in and it actually made me valid for a while. It was pretty cool. I was getting a lot of attention. It’s crazy, I’ll be on the streets and I usually hear like, ‘Hey, Kurt Angle.’ And I have people going, ‘Wait you’re that meme guy!’ I’m like no, I’m Kurt Angle. They go ‘Oh you’re Kurt Angle too?’”
In the same interview, Kurt Angle also admitted that he didn’t feel like he was appreciated in his final WWE run since he worked for TNA for over a decade even though he revealed the original plan was to return much sooner.
