Kurt Angle Dismayed By WWE’s Treatment Of Baron Corbin
Kurt Angle has questioned WWE.
After a decade with TNA, Kurt Angle left the company in March 2016. From there the star headed back out onto the independent scene before making his long-awaited return to WWE in 2017.
The legend was quickly inducted into the Hall of Fame before starting what would turn out to be the final stage of his wrestling career.
The night after WrestleMania 33 Angle became Raw General Manager and eventually returned to the ring. The veteran continued to make regular appearances on television both in and out of the ring until finally hanging up his boots after defeat to Baron Corbin at WrestleMania 35.
Kurt Angle Thinks WWE Didn’t Get The Best Out Of Baron Corbin
Despite being the man to retire Angle, Corbin was never able to find a place at the top of the card and returned to NXT in mid-2023. Over the following 12 months, Corbin turned in some of the best work of his career, earning praise across the board. However, he was released on November 1st.
During an interview with Bill Pritchard of Wrestle Zone, Angle said he feels underrated, explaining that WWE didn’t do enough to capitalise on their match at WrestleMania 35.
“Baron, I think he’s underrated. I think it kinda sucks [seeing him get let go]. They started utilizing him the way they should have. They had him beat me, which I was okay with,” Angle said. “It was my last match. And obviously, you are going to lose your last match when you retire. But, Baron after that, he ended up winning King of The Ring. And then nothing else happened with him.
It’s a little disappointing to know that he beat a legend at WrestleMania, the legend’s last match. And they didn’t do much with him after that. For me, it makes me feel like I did that for nothing,” Angle admitted. “And — so, it’s not like a ‘Screw You Angle,’ but it kinda is. I thought they were gonna run with the kid. I thought they were going to make him one of the top-tier guys and he was on his way.”
While discussing Corbin’s frequent character changes, Angle suggested the company might have been better served by letting him be himself.
“Maybe that’s why they let him go, they couldn’t find that character. But Baron had a great personality,” Angle added. “He didn’t need a character. He could be him, he was entertaining as it is. So, I was just a little disappointed that they didn’t do much with him and then they let him go.”
Following his departure, Baron Corbin agreed with a fan on social media who claimed WWE had made a mistake in letting him go. The star also confirmed he was shooting content for WWE Raw’s move to Netflix just days before he was released.
