Kevin Owens has recalled being told he was the best choice to face Steve Austin in Stone Cold’s WrestleMania return match.

The main event of the first night of WrestleMania 38 was advertised as the “Kevin Owens Show” talk show with Kevin Owens set to interview WWE Hall of Famer “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. However, going into WrestleMania there were reports that Austin was likely going to wrestle, but WWE chose not to promote it as a match.

While Owens and Austin were seated in the ring, things got heated between them (as most people would expect), which led to the two men agreeing to a match right there.

In what was the 57-year-old (he’s 58 now) Austin’s first match in 19 years going back to his retirement match at WrestleMania 19, they had a competitive brawl all around AT&T Stadium in Dallas. Ultimately, Austin picked up the win with Stone Cold Stunner in a well-received match that went about 14 minutes.

Kevin Owens talked to the New York Post about his unforgettable WrestleMania match with Stone Cold.

“I still don’t have a full grasp on how that happened. All I know is I was told by several people, from Steve to Vince McMahon to Bruce Prichard, it couldn’t have been anybody other than you — meaning me — with Steve.”

“I’m not sure who suggested it, who asked for it or how it came about. One day I’ll find out. But the point is that it’s extremely flattering to me that those three all thought I was the best choice. There’s really no higher compliment than that for me.”

Owens also remarked about how special of a moment it was for him.

“It doesn’t get any better than that. I said it the day after the match: It’s all downhill from here.”

A lot has changed since WrestleMania 38 since Owens is no longer a heel and is now one of the most popular babyfaces in WWE.

This coming Friday, December 30th, Owens will team up with his former rival John Cena against the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns & Sami Zayn in a huge match on the final Smackdown of 2022.
