Kevin Owens Undergoes Surgery

Kevin Owens WWE Injury

The future WWE Hall of Famer, Kevin Owens, has undergone surgery for a serious neck injury.

Kevin Owens was supposed to have a grudge match against Randy Orton at WrestleMania 41, but that match didn’t happen. That’s because Kevin Owens announced to WWE fans on WWE SmackDown in Chicago on April 4th that he had suffered a serious neck injury that will require surgery.

Since then, rumors have circulated about when Owens would undergo surgery, how much time he might miss, and various other aspects of his health status.

Three months after his announcement on SmackDown, Kevin Owens underwent neck surgery on July 18th, according to Fightful Select‘s Sean Ross Sapp. It was reported that the surgery was a success.

At the time of the Owens injury announcement, Fightful was informed that the neck surgery would likely cause Owens to miss WrestleMania 41 and WrestleMania 42 next April. One year is considered the minimum for an injury of this kind, but every person and situation is different, so it also depends on how Owens heals.

How Did Kevin Owens Injure His Neck?

As for when the neck injury happened, Kevin Owens explained in an April interview that it was doing something routine during a match.

“So I know for a fact there’s a specific moment [the injury occurred] because in December, I did a full body MRI just on my own for curiosity just to see if there’s anything I should be aware of. You can see if you have issues with your bone structure or organs or anything like that. At the time the report came back that my knees were s**t but I’ve been well aware of that for a long time so there’s no concern there.

And there was something about my spine, mild to moderate stenosis, and I showed it to WWE doctors and they’re like, ‘Yeah, for what you guys do everyone’s got a level of stenosis. Everyone on Earth walking around has a level of stenosis, but your spine and neck and everything else looks good. Everything looks good for what you’ve been doing. You’re fine’. I was like, ‘Great’ and I felt great.

But then in January I had a match and in the match I had two things happen that really jarred my neck and that’s when the issues started so I knew there was something. And then we ended up doing an MRI this week and found out that it’s serious. So I think that match in January is what did it because I had an MRI the month before that and everything looked fine.”

When he talked to his good friend, WWE’s Cody Rhodes, about the neck injury in June, Owens gave an update on how he was feeling.

“It’s been such a frustrating process, we’re letting my spinal cord heal as much as it can on its own before we go in for the surgery because how extensive the surgery will be depends on how my spinal cord looks when we go in there.

We’re waiting until mid-July to do the surgery hopefully its a normal neck fusion, it might not be, we don’t know. So since then I’ve felt fine, my neck’s been fine I’m not in pain.”

Owens would go on to admit that he had started getting symptoms all at once.

“So it’s been pretty f**king brutal. I really can’t wait for this surgery and then to move forward, whatever that looks like, but it’s been very frustrating.”

The last match that the 41-year-old Kevin Owens had was against his best friend Sami Zayn at WWE Elimination Chamber in an Unsanctioned Match that WWE fans will remember as one of the best matches of the year.

Everybody here at TJRWrestling wishes Kevin Owens all the best as he recovers from neck surgery.
