Kevin Owens Says “Sami & The Usos Deserved WrestleMania Main Event”
Kevin Owens felt it was only right that Sami Zayn and The Usos ended up on the biggest stage at WrestleMania 39.
One year prior to the event, Kevin Owens had ended up having Steve Austin’s first match for many years at WrestleMania 38, after a KO Show segment turned in to an officially sanctioned contest.
The following year he was in the spotlight again, however it was unclear what match would main event the first night of WrestleMania 39. In a discussion with Ariel Helwani for BT Sport, Owens admitted that the situation was unclear but he was hopeful.
There was talk at one point before WrestleMania, ‘who is going to be the main event? Is it going to be Charlotte [Charlotte Flair] and Rhea [Rhea Ripley] or is it the Tag team Title match?’ I obviously wanted it to be us because I felt like our story deserved it, 100%.
“I’m So Glad It Worked Out”
Continuing on, Kevin Owens noted that he had already had that opportunity, but the other three wrestlers in the match deserved to have that on their resume.
As far as matches go, of course that match could main event, no problem. Story wise, to me there is no doubt it should have been us. I really wanted to main event, not for me, I got to do it with Steve [Steve Austin at WrestleMania 38]. Sami and the Usos deserved that. I’m so glad it worked out because they deserved it more than anybody.
Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn would go on to win the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championships from The Usos on the first night of WrestleMania 39, marking the first time a tag team title match had main evented ‘The Showcase Of The Immortals’.
