Kenny Omega’s AEW Return Plans Revealed

Kenny Omega AEW

Kenny Omega has been out of action since 2023 but it seems AEW already has plans in place for when he’s ready to return to the ring.

Back in late May, it was reported that Kenny Omega had undergone surgery as he continued his battle with diverticulitis. The former AEW World Champion was diagnosed with the illness back in December but had hoped to avoid going under the knife.

Omega hasn’t wrestled since defeating Ethan Page on December 5th at a taping for AEW Collision. The match was broadcast four days later. Around this time, the star was in a great deal of pain but continued to try and work through the undiagnosed issue.

Despite the illness, Omega briefly returned to AEW on the May 1st episode of Dynamite to get involved in the storyline involving the Young Bucks and Tony Khan.

Kenny Omega Facing Old Rival In AEW Return

Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer has now given an update on both Kenny Omega and Kota Ibushi’s future plans in AEW and noted that Ibushi will return when Omega does and when The Best Bout Machine is ready for a comeback he’s set for a huge showdown with his old rival Kazuchika Okada:

[Kota Ibushi’s] coming back to AEW – basically, when Kenny Omega’s returning, he’s returning. He’s under contract and everything like that. He basically said he’s under contract there and he’s waiting for Omega to return for him to return. I don’t know when – I don’t know if there’s even a date for when Omega will return.

Put it this way, I don’t think it’s so far away as before when I would talk about it like I didn’t want to think about it, it’s a long way away. He’s getting better, I know that. I looked up the surgery that he had and usually for a wrestler it’s like a 4 month recovery, a lot of wrestlers push it and probably come back quicker.

That would be September but he didn’t just have the hernia problem, he had a lot of different problems. But like I said, he is coming back, that’s pretty much the word and I don’t think it’s months and months away. […] He has not told me anything but the vibe I have is that it’ll be before the end of the year. Obviously when he’s back and as soon as he feels ready they’re gonna go to the Okada thing.
