Kenny Omega Battling “Serious Pain” As AEW Injury Crisis Grows
There’s been some bad news about Kenny Omega.
At Forbidden Door, Kenny Omega teamed with Kota Ibushi, Will Ospreay, Darby Allin, and Hiroshi Tanahashi to beat the Death Riders, Gabe Kidd, and the Young Bucks in a wild Lights Out Steel Cage Match.
Ahead of the show, Will Ospreay confirmed that he’s set to undergo neck surgery to repair two herniated discs, which have been pressing on his spinal cord. Unsurprisingly, given the severity of the injury, Ospreay is expected to be out for a lengthy period of time.
Just as the dust was settling on Ospreay’s news, it was reported that Swerve Strickland also required surgery. In the days after the show, Strickland went under the knife to repair the torn meniscus he suffered back in 2019.
In the days after Forbidden Door, Strickland confirmed he’d had the surgery.
Kenny Omega Struggling
Unfortunately for AEW, things seem to be going from bad to worse.
According to a new report from Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Kenny Omega is “battling very serious pain.” Although Meltzer didn’t confirm any details on the cause of the pain, the suggestion that Omega is struggling hugely concerning for all involved.
Omega didn’t wrestle at all in 2024 after being diagnosed with diverticulitis in December 2023. Although there were hopes he could avoid it, the star later underwent surgery.
The former AEW World Champion also missed nine months from the end of 2021 and into 2022 due to a raft of injuries. During this period, he first expressed doubts about the length of his career, noting the toll wrestling had already taken on his body.
However, there has been some good news as it’s been revealed that Orange Cassidy is expected to be back in action “sooner rather than later.” The star hasn’t wrestled since suffering a shoulder injury back in March.
