What Kenny Omega Regrets About Being An AEW EVP

Kenny Omega AEW

Kenny Omega admits that being an AEW EVP has taken him away from doing other fun things as a pro wrestler.

When AEW launched in January 2019, there was a defined management team with Tony Khan as the Owner, GM and Head of Creative in the company. In addition to that, they also had Cody Rhodes, The Young Bucks – Matt & Nick Jackson, and Kenny Omega as Executive Vice Presidents in the company.

The EVP roles for those wrestlers weren’t something that AEW hid from because the four of them were instrumental in building the roster. They brought in wrestlers who they knew from other promotions and the independent wrestling scene. Omega was known for building the women’s division, which led to women like former AEW Women’s Champions Riho and Hikaru Shida being brought into the company.

In their current roles as heels, The Young Bucks love to brag about being EVPs with a lot of power in the company. It’s part of why they get booed so much.

AEW International Champion Kenny Omega appeared on Adi Shankar’s podcast to discuss “cancel culture” and how being an AEW EVP means that Omega and his friends had to be careful about what they said and did at all times.

“For me, that was the most regrettable [thing] about becoming an EVP for AEW, in fact, was that by becoming an EVP for AEW.

We were then now on the hook for anything that we did, said, and if it wasn’t to the network’s liking or it offended, you know, people, fans and they wrote a formal complaint, we could essentially be immediately taken off the air.”

Kenny Omega Feels That Being An EVP Ended “Being The Elite”

Prior to launching AEW, the foursome of The Young Bucks, Kenny Omega and Cody Rhodes, did their “Being The Elite” series on YouTube. It was a lot of very sarcastic and silly content, but eventually, they stopped doing it after AEW launched. Omega expressed his frustrations with “Being The Elite” ending.

“We knew we were joking, people loved what we were doing back then, and they’re all laughing with us, and at us, and we love that they were,” he noted. “But we’re just like: man, isn’t it kind of sad that we just can’t do it anymore?”

At AEW Double or Nothing on May 25th, Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks will be on opposite sides during the 6-on-6 Anarchy in the Arena tag team match, which is one of the biggest matches on the show.
